Neuromuscular and Proprioceptive Training

Picture
Proprioception is in essence the body’s ability to sense where it is in space and how to appropriately respond to it’s environment. It involves input from a variety of sensory receptors in the body that communicate with the central nervous system to gauge and correct posture and precision of movement. Proprioceptive ability can be trained and improved. Take for example our ability to learn to type without looking at the keys or a gymnast's ability to balance and perform intricate maneuvers on a balance beam without looking.

Whenever the musculoskeletal or nervous system is injured, it will negatively affect your horse’s proprioceptive system which is vital for balance, motor control and agility. The importance of proprioceptive training after musculoskeletal injury and neurologic damage has been very well established in human medicine.  Horses recovering from neurologic injury are in particular need of neuromuscular retraining.

Your horse’s program will address any proprioceptive, balance and coordination problems with a variety of neuromuscular activities and therapies.  A variety of proprioceptive training devices including Kinesiotaping are used to augment therapy.
